Designed by David Marshall, this square brass ashtray pairs a heavily textured brass frame with a smooth aluminium centre. The contrast between the two metals gives the object a quiet architectural quality while remaining unmistakably tactile.Although conceived as an ashtray, its sculptural presence lends itself just as naturally to holding jewellery, keys or other small objects. The softened brass patina highlights the depth of the casting and continues to evolve through everyday use.Includes maker’s mark.

of matter

of matter is an editorially curated destination for timeless design, bringing together vintage objects, furniture and lighting selected for their material presence, surface integrity and quiet traces of time.Rather than being defined by a single style, era or origin, the collection is shaped by a consistent point of view. Each piece is chosen for how it holds space, how it ages and how naturally it sits within a contemporary interior. From 19th-century craftsmanship to mid-century lighting and sculptural objects, the edit spans decades and disciplines, united by material intelligence, enduring quality and permanence.Patina is understood not as a flaw, but as evidence of history, use and authenticity. Every object is selected to be lived with, touched and passed on.
