An iconic Zig Zag chair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, produced in the 1960s by Gerard van de Groenekan in Utrecht, The Netherlands, this piece captures the essence of early modernist design and the ideals of the De Stijl movement. Designed around 1934, the Zig Zag chair is a radical exploration of form and structure—composed of four flat planes joined in a continuous Z-shaped silhouette, eliminating the need for conventional legs. Its bold construction transforms a functional object into a sculptural statement. Executed in solid elm, this example features a beautifully pronounced grain that adds warmth and depth to its geometric clarity. The visible joinery and aged fastenings reflect the integrity of its construction and enhance its authentic character. Van de Groenekan, Rietveld’s trusted cabinetmaker, was responsible for producing some of the most faithful editions of his furniture, making this chair particularly desirable among collectors. With good provenance (available upon request), this piece stands as both a functional design object and a significant work of 20th-century design history. A timeless and highly collectible statement piece. Measurements:H 73 x W 37.5 x D 46 x SH 43 cm

Modern Living
