Art Deco Lidded Box with Tassel ‘Booms Glass De Rupel’ Belgium 1940s

An elegant Art Deco lidded box produced by the renowned glassworks ‘De Rupel’ in Boom, Belgium, named after the river which brings the sand used for the glass making in this particular workshop. Belgium, 1930s – 1940s.Executed in deep black glass with hand-applied gold decoration, it reflects the refined decorative language for which the factory became known during the interwar and post-war years. The glossy black glass provides a striking backdrop for the warm gold detailing, while the stepped profile gives the box a sculptural presence. The box is composed of a rounded base and a stepped domed lid, crowned with a spherical finial that reinforces its architectural silhouette. Delicate gilt bands encircle the body, while scattered gilded accents provide a subtle decorative rhythm without disturbing the clarity of the form. The original tassel completes the composition, introducing a very elegant textile contrast to the polished glass surface.‘De Rupel’ was among Belgium’s leading artistic glass manufacturers, producing decorative objects that combined traditional craftsmanship with the geometric elegance of the art deco movement. Their work, often called ‘Booms Glass’ is distinguished by balanced proportions, rich colour combinations and carefully executed hand decoration.
